We study the evolution of ecologically important traits, primarily focusing on plant populations.

We are hiring a lab manager/research tech and a postdoctoral scholar. The lab manager position is especially good for someone who is interested in learning ancient DNA tecniques in the clean lab here. The postdoc position is to study local adaptation to environment in sorghum and Arabidopsis, our two main study systems.

Over the last year we have had many comings and goings not updated on this site (unfortunatley). Postdocs Margarita Takou and Aayudh Das moved on to positions at the University of Cologne, and Garuda Therapeutics, respectively. Former lab technician Hailey Bowers moved to the Penn State Materials Research Institute, after helping establish our herbarium genomics work in the new Penn State ancient DNA lab. PI Lasky returned from sabbatical. A new undergraduate Molly Biver has begun work in the lab.

This week in Montpellier five of us are presenting at the Global Sorghum Meeting. This is our first time attending. Joel Masanga will present on Striga resistance, Aayudh Das will present on the genomics of local adaptation in landraces, Chloee McLaughlin will present on strigolactones in sorghum, Eleanna Cerda Vasquez will present on population structure in sorghum landraces, and Jesse Lasky will present on genotype-environment associations.

This semester two people joined the lab.
First, Katherine Blocklove is a Ph.D. student in Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science. She previously received her BS from Brandeis University. She will join the new cohort of students in the Center for Root and Rhizosphere Biology.
Second, Shiran Ben-Zeev is a new postdoc who will work on drought, competition, and belowground interactions in sorghum. He recently received his PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Shiran is a BARD postdoctoral fellow.

Over the summer several people joined the lab.
First, Eleanna Cerda is a Ph.D. student in Plant Biology. She has an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and previously received her BA from Mt Holyoke College.
Next, Robin Mailum is a new undergraduate in the lab, majoring in Biology.
Third, Aayudh Das is a new postdoc who will work on adaptation in sorghum landraces. He recently received his PhD from the University of Vermont.
Finally, Joel Masanga is a new postdoc who will work on sorghum-Striga interactions. He recently received his PhD from Kenyatta University.

We will soon be hiring 2 new postdocs in evolutionary genomics or physiology. These postdocs will work on a Gates Foundation-funded project to find locally-adaptive alleles in sorghum, and to validate these alleles for the improvement of African sorghum. We have a few hundred cheatgrass genotypes growing in a growth chamber to get at basic life history variation and to get DNA for whole genome resequencing. Also, our BromeCast collaborators are currently sowing thousands of cheatgrass seeds, each glued to a marked toothpick, across four common gardens in Idaho and Wyoming.

We have recently published two papers using crop landraces (traditional local variaties) to understand diversity within and among populations.
Former lab postdoc Emily Bellis led a paper studying how sorghum landraces adapt to the presence of a parasite (PNAS).
We collaborated with Rafal Gutaker & the Purugganan Lab to study how gene flow and adaptation to new environments has shaped the diversity of rice landraces (Nature Plants).
